Altman and Ive’s $6.5 Billion Project Delayed Due to Technical Problems

A new device project jointly developed by OpenAI and legendary Apple designer Jony Ive—an AI-powered, screenless gadget—has reportedly encountered serious technical challenges. According to the Financial Times, these obstacles could delay the product’s launch.

It is known that in May, OpenAI acquired the device startup io, founded by CEO Sam Altman and Jony Ive, in a deal valued at $6.5 billion. At the time, Altman stated that this collaboration would help create “a new generation of AI-powered computers.” The first devices were initially planned to be unveiled in 2026.

The project aims to build a palm-sized, screenless device capable of receiving audio and visual signals from its surroundings and responding to user queries.

However, several key issues remain unresolved before the device can function successfully. These include defining the device’s “personality,” managing privacy concerns, and establishing the necessary computational infrastructure.

For example, the device is intended to operate in an “always-on” mode, constantly listening and ready to respond. Yet, the team has faced difficulties ensuring that it speaks only when necessary and ends conversations at the right moment.

It appears that this innovative yet ambitious AI device project will likely miss its expected launch date due to the technical and conceptual hurdles it faces.
