Amazon has announced that it will discontinue the operation of its Appstore on the Android platform starting August 20 this year. The company has officially notified app developers, stating that no new apps will be added to the store.
In addition, Amazon has declared that its Amazon Coins digital currency, used for purchasing games and apps on the Appstore, will also be discontinued on the same date. The company emphasized that any remaining coins held by users will be refunded before the shutdown.
An Amazon spokesperson commented on the decision:
"We are ending support for the Amazon Appstore on Android devices and shifting our focus to enhancing the experience on our own devices, including Fire TV and Fire Tablet, where the majority of our customers engage with our store."
Launched in 2011 as an alternative to Google Play, the Amazon Appstore had a limited user base. Additionally, concerns arose due to the presence of malicious applications discovered on the platform.
It is worth noting that Amazon had also announced last year that it would discontinue support for its Appstore on Windows. Introduced in 2021, this system will completely cease operations by March 2025.
