OpenAI has launched the “Instant Checkout” feature in ChatGPT, allowing users to make purchases directly from the chat window without leaving the platform.
This new service is initially available to ChatGPT Pro, Plus, and free account holders in the U.S. With this feature, users can buy products from Etsy and over a million Shopify sellers, including well-known brands like Glossier, SKIMS, Spanx, and Vuori.
Previously, ChatGPT would only provide product names, images, prices, and purchase links in response to user queries. With this update, users can now simply click a “Buy Now” button within the chat window to confirm payment and shipping details without leaving the conversation.
OpenAI developed this shopping service in collaboration with Stripe, using a protocol called the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP). The company has announced that ACP will be open-source, meaning that in the future, it can be integrated into ChatGPT or other AI-based chat platforms.
Some users have expressed concerns about sharing payment information directly through ChatGPT. OpenAI clarified that payment and shipping processes are handled directly by the sellers through their existing systems, with ChatGPT acting only as a “secure intermediary.” In other words, ChatGPT does not store payments itself; it merely facilitates the process.
