Thanks to this partnership, ChatGPT users will now be able to make instant and seamless payments through PayPal. Following the announcement, PayPal’s stock value rose by 13% in pre-market trading.
As part of this collaboration, PayPal will also integrate its global commerce network into the OpenAI platform. This means users will be able to make purchases directly within ChatGPT.
Such “Agentic AI” shopping tools are considered the next big shift in online retail, as AI systems will be able to independently research products, compare prices, and even complete purchases on behalf of users. These tools will act as digital assistants — understanding user preferences, setting budgets, evaluating reviews, and tracking prices.
PayPal CEO Alex Chriss stated, “With this partnership with OpenAI and the introduction of the Agentic Commerce Protocol, PayPal will enhance payment and commerce experiences by enabling our shared customers to move from chat to checkout with just a few taps.”
It should be noted that PayPal is also releasing its financial results for the quarter ending September 30 today.
