Sony announced in February that it would stop producing Blu-ray discs.
This marks the end of the era of Blu-ray optical discs. Sony had already stopped producing Blu-ray discs for consumers last year, but continued to produce them for commercial customers. Now, it has decided to stop production altogether.
The abandonment of Blu-ray disc production is expected, as in an era dominated by streaming services, users prefer to watch content online. In addition, Sony did not equip the PlayStation 5 Pro game console with an optical drive, but retained support for external drives for the PS 5 Slim.
Blu-ray discs officially appeared on the market in 2006. At that time, their competitor in the market was Toshiba's HD DVD discs. However, Sony managed to overtake Toshiba by making deals with movie producers and adding a Blu-ray drive to the PS 3 console.
