Imports of electric and hybrid cars in Uzbekistan overtake internal combustion engine cars for the first time
In 2024, imports of electric and hybrid cars in Uzbekistan for the first time exceeded gasoline cars. The average price of imported electric cars decreased by almost three times.
According to data provided by the Customs Committee of Uzbekistan, a total of 80,235 passenger cars were imported into the country last year. The total value of these cars amounted to $ 1.9 billion. Compared to 2023, the volume of imports decreased by 7% (5,710 units), and the value by 33.1% (632.6 million dollars).
Of these cars, 32,928 were gasoline cars. Imports of gasoline cars decreased by 36.3%, from 51,699 to 32,928 units, and their value decreased by 40%, from $1.18 billion to $707.2 million. The share of gasoline cars in total imports decreased from 64.4% to 44.2%.
At the same time, imports of environmentally friendly cars increased. In particular, imports of gasoline-electric hybrid cars increased by 42%, from 12,300 to 17,480 units. This was an increase of 17%, worth $339.3 million. The share of hybrid cars in total imports increased from 15.3% to 23.4%.
Imports of electric cars increased by 1.5 times, from 16,084 to 24,095 units. However, their total value decreased by 48.2% to $224.8 million. The share of electric cars in imports increased from 20% to 32.3%.
The average import price of electric cars decreased almost threefold, from $26,972 to $9,330 (before VAT and customs duties). The price of hybrid cars decreased from $23,570 to $19,410 (-17.6%), and the price of gasoline cars decreased from $22,858 to $21,476 (-6%).
As a result, the share of hybrid and electric cars in total imports reached 55.8%, surpassing gasoline cars (44.2%). In total, the number of hybrid and electric cars was 33,564, and the number of gasoline cars was 32,928.
Imports of electric cars in Uzbekistan are exempt from excise duties, customs duties, and vehicle taxes. In addition, taxi drivers operating with electric or hybrid cars are exempt from license fees until 2030. From the beginning of 2023, incentives are also applied to entrepreneurs for installing charging stations for electric cars.
In addition, while the registration fee for electric and hybrid cars is 1.5 basic units of account (about $43), for gasoline cars this amount is 6.84 basic units of account (about $198), which makes registering electric cars cheaper.
Difficulties at gas stations and expensive fuel have also encouraged drivers to switch to electric cars.
