Meta plans to launch an ad-free paid subscription model for Facebook and Instagram in the European Union in November. The price of this new model will be 9.99 euros per month for the web version and 12.99 euros per month for the mobile versions.
The ruling comes after a Luxembourg-based court ruled that Meta must obtain consent in the EU before serving personalized ads on Facebook. According to the court order, the publication of personalized ads will not be allowed without the consent of the user.
This led Meta to a paid subscription model. In addition to this model, Meta said it will continue to provide ad-choice tools to free users. This paid subscription will only be available to users aged 18 and over residing in the EU, the European Economic Area and Switzerland. Additional fees will apply from March 1, 2024. In addition, the user's data will not be used to target ads during the subscription period.
