Microsoft completely updates Windows error screen after 40 years

Microsoft is updating the famous Windows error screen (Blue Screen of Death – BSOD) for the first time in 40 years. The new design, which will be introduced with the upcoming Windows 11 24H2 update, will replace the classic blue screen with a black background and a simpler interface. These changes aim to make system error diagnostics easier and help users resolve issues more quickly.

The new error screen will no longer display the sad face icon or QR code. Instead, it will provide more specific and useful information about the error code and the system driver causing the problem. The screen will also show a progress indicator for the device’s restart process. Additionally, Microsoft is introducing a new feature called Quick Machine Recovery, which will automatically initiate a recovery process if the system fails to start properly, reducing the need for IT specialists’ intervention.

Microsoft is implementing these updates to improve system stability and enhance user experience, following the CrowdStrike incident in 2024. The new design will be available to all Windows 11 users in the summer of 2025. These steps represent important progress by Microsoft toward ensuring stability and ease of use in its operating system.
