Microsoft confirms upcoming release of Windows 11 25H2: What’s new?

Microsoft has officially confirmed that the next major update for Windows 11 will be version 25H2. The first preview build has already been released to developers via the Windows Insider program, according to Windows Central.

Same Core Platform Means Faster Updates

The new 25H2 update will be based on the same platform as the current 24H2 version. This means the update process will be similar in speed to cumulative security and feature updates—no need to reinstall system files. For comparison, upgrading from 23H2 to 24H2 previously required more time due to system file replacement.

Compatibility Maintained Across Versions

According to Microsoft, Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2 share the same codebase, with only additional features included in the newer version. This ensures seamless compatibility between the two and reduces the risk of technical issues during or after the upgrade.

What Features Can We Expect?

Although no major changes have been spotted yet in the 25H2 preview, several new features are already in development:

  • A redesigned Start menu is on the way. Microsoft aims to create a cleaner and more customizable layout, with more space, less clutter, and reduced advertising content.
  • An AI-powered assistant will be integrated into the Settings app. This tool will allow users to change system settings using voice or text commands, making configuration easier and faster.

When Will the Update Be Available?

Microsoft plans to release Windows 11 version 25H2 to all users in September or October 2025. Until then, it will remain available only to testers who have joined the Windows Insider program.
