OpenAI Acquires Company Developing AI Interface for Mac

OpenAI has acquired Software Applications, the company behind Sky, an AI-powered, natural language-based interface for Mac computers. The financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed. The Sky app can observe user activity on the screen and perform various operations within applications.

This acquisition is a key part of OpenAI’s strategy to enhance user experience on desktop computers and expand its influence within the Mac ecosystem. Still unreleased, Sky is designed to assist in a wide range of tasks, from messaging and planning to coding and navigating between applications. It functions as an active digital assistant, understanding what is displayed on the screen and executing tasks on behalf of the user.

Ari Weinstein, co-founder and CEO of Software Applications, stated that the product addresses the need for computers to be more intuitive, efficient, and customizable. He added, “With large language models, the foundation for what we can accomplish is finally in our hands,” emphasizing the goal of supporting users’ creativity and thought processes.

The Sky team brings notable experience in technology. Co-founder Conrad Kramer was one of the creators of Workflow, acquired by Apple and forming the basis for Shortcuts. Co-founder and COO Kim Beverett has extensive experience at Apple, having worked on products such as Safari, WebKit, Messages, Mail, and FaceTime.

This acquisition is expected to accelerate AI adoption in the Mac ecosystem, where Apple has yet to fully catch up with competitors despite offering features like text support, real-time translation, and visual search under the Apple Intelligence brand. While financial details were not disclosed, sources note that Software Applications previously raised approximately $6.5 million from prominent investors, including Sam Altman.

The acquisition was overseen by Nik Turli, head of OpenAI’s ChatGPT division, and Fidji Simo, responsible for applications, and approved by OpenAI’s board. This move equips OpenAI not only with large language models but also with assistant technology capable of transforming daily interactions with devices. The acquisition exemplifies OpenAI’s vision of integrating AI into all aspects of everyday life, starting with the Mac platform.
