OpenAI has appointed a new CEO - Twitch co-founder Emmett Shear

Axios informed about his new appointment. OpenAI employees received the news of Sam Altman's dismissal on November 19 from co-founder Ilya Sutskever. He told the team that Sam Altman would not be returning to the company. He has now been replaced by Emmett Shear.
Emmett Shear co-founded the video platform Twitch in 2007. According to media reports, Shear stepped down as CEO of Twitch in March 2023, focusing more on product development than features for creators. In May of the same year, he became a consultant at the Y Combinator incubator, which Altman led from 2014-2019.
According to Bloomberg, OpenAI's board of directors not only appreciated how Twitch became one of the leaders in the video services market under Shear's leadership, but Shear's "awareness of the existential dangers that AI hides."
It is not clear why the company changed its decision so quickly to appoint technical director Mira Murati and did not want to defend her candidacy.
Altman's return has also been discussed, but he has called for an overhaul of the management structure, the WSJ reported, citing sources. According to them, Sam suggested appointing those who better understood his "business vision" to the board. Brian Chesky, head of Airbnb, Lauren Powell Jobs, founder of the Emerson Collective non-profit project, and Sheryl Sandberg, who served as the operations director of Meta, were mentioned in the negotiations.
According to the WSJ, the current board disagreed with Altman's terms. It is not known what specifically did not suit them and whether possible compromises were discussed. The WSJ and Axios acknowledge that the company is facing a talent drain as the former CEO looks to launch a new AI startup with co-founder Greg Brockman.
