OpenAI has launched a new program supporting data storage in Asia

OpenAI has announced the launch of a new data residency program in the Asia region. This initiative follows the company’s similar rollout in Europe in February and is part of OpenAI’s broader strategy to expand its international presence.

The new program is designed for users of ChatGPT Enterprise, ChatGPT Edu, and the OpenAI API. Its goal is to support Asia-based organizations in complying with local legal and ethical data sovereignty requirements. Eligible API users and new ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu subscribers can now opt to store their data physically in supported countries, including Japan, India, Singapore, and South Korea.

In its official blog post, OpenAI stated:

“For the API platform and ChatGPT business products, data remains confidential, secure, and entirely owned by you. Data residency further enhances control over data for organizations.”

This initiative is being launched alongside “OpenAI for Countries,” a new effort aimed at building stronger infrastructure to better serve global users. The project will allow the company to expand its technological capabilities in international markets.

The new program is considered a significant step toward ensuring legal compliance and meeting growing demands for data security in the AI sector.
