OpenAI introduces new AI models – GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 Mini – to ChatGPT

OpenAI has announced the integration of its latest AI models — GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 mini — into the ChatGPT platform. The news was officially shared through the company's account on X (formerly Twitter).

According to OpenAI spokesperson Shaokyi Amdo, GPT-4.1 is particularly significant for programmers. The model is more effective than previous versions in writing and debugging code. It also outperforms the GPT-4o model in terms of code generation, instruction following, and delivers faster performance overall.

Availability and Access:

GPT-4.1 is now available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team subscribers.

GPT-4.1 mini is accessible to both free and paid users of ChatGPT.

As part of the update, OpenAI is retiring the GPT-4.0 mini model from the platform entirely.

Initially, these models were released in April exclusively via OpenAI’s developer API. At the time, the release sparked criticism from some AI researchers, who argued that OpenAI failed to provide a safety report, thereby compromising transparency standards. In response, OpenAI clarified that GPT-4.1 is not a frontier model, and therefore does not require the same level of safety reporting.

OpenAI's Head of Safety Systems, Johannes Heidecke, explained:

“GPT-4.1 doesn’t introduce new modalities or interaction capabilities, and it doesn’t surpass o3 in intelligence. This means the safety considerations here are different from those of frontier models.”

Launch of the Safety Evaluations Hub

Following these developments, OpenAI announced it would share more detailed information about GPT-4.1 and its other AI models. The company has committed to publishing the results of internal safety evaluations more frequently and transparently. For this purpose, it launched a new platform — the Safety Evaluations Hub.

This update arrives amid a surge of interest in AI coding tools. Notably, OpenAI is reportedly nearing the acquisition of Windsurf, a popular AI-powered coding tool, in a deal worth $3 billion. Meanwhile, Google has updated its Gemini chatbot to integrate more easily with GitHub projects.

These new models are expected to further enhance productivity and code-related capabilities, offering users faster and more efficient tools as AI technology continues to evolve.
