OpenAI is developing a project to replace financial analysts

OpenAI is working on the “Project Mercury” initiative, and according to Bloomberg, the main goal of this project is to develop artificial intelligence systems capable of performing the tasks of financial analysts working in investment banks.

To achieve this, OpenAI has recruited former investment bankers with experience at major financial institutions such as JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, and Morgan Stanley. These experts are reportedly paid $150 per hour. They help train AI systems in banking models and analytical methods by preparing various financial models and presentations, as well as writing prompts that allow the AI to simulate real-world financial workflows. Each participant is typically expected to submit one model per week.

The recruitment process for the project is also unusual: candidates first go through an interview with an AI chatbot, followed by financial reporting and modeling tests.

Although Project Mercury is still in its early stages, OpenAI plans to turn this initiative into a commercial product for businesses in the future. The company stated that its collaboration with bankers is conducted through third-party contractors.

Experts consider this move one of the most ambitious and bold steps toward replacing human labor in the financial sector with artificial intelligence.
