OpenAI makes its first cybersecurity investment

Generative AI has provided hackers with new tools, allowing them to create everything from fake images to counterfeit receipts, putting many companies at risk of cyberattacks. In response to these threats, OpenAI has made its first cybersecurity investment, funding the startup Adaptive Security with $43 million.

Based in New York, Adaptive Security simulates AI-generated "hacker attacks" to train employees to recognize and defend against these threats. For instance, an employee may receive a call from someone pretending to be the CTO asking for a verification code, but the call is actually a spoof. This technology doesn't just fake phone calls but also manipulates SMS and emails, preparing employees to better identify and respond to risks.

Adaptive Security focuses on social engineering attacks, which, although simple, can be highly damaging. For example, in 2022, Axie Infinity lost $600 million due to a social engineering attack.

Adaptive Security’s CEO, Brian Long, noted that AI tools have made these attacks easier to execute. The company already serves over 100 clients, and positive feedback from them led OpenAI to invest in the startup.

The new funding will help Adaptive Security continue developing its product and advance in the fight against AI-driven threats. Other startups working to mitigate AI risks, like Cyberhaven, which raised $100 million to protect personal data, also show a growing interest in this field.

This investment signals OpenAI’s increasing interest in cybersecurity and the future of innovation in combating AI-related threats.
