OpenAI’s Sora Hits App Store’s Top 3 on Day One

Although the Sora app is currently invite-only and, in its initial stage, available exclusively to users in the U.S. and Canada, it has already generated significant interest. According to Appfigures, Sora recorded 56,000 downloads on its launch day, quickly climbing to No. 3 on the U.S. App Store’s Overall Top Apps chart.

The company estimates that Sora’s iOS app was installed 164,000 times within its first two days (September 30 and October 1).

Sora’s first-day performance outpaced the launches of other major AI apps such as Anthropic’s Claude and Microsoft’s Copilot, and matched the debut of xAI’s Grok. At the same time, OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini iOS apps had slightly stronger launches, each reaching at least 80,000 downloads on day one.

To make the comparison more objective, Appfigures considered download figures only for the U.S. and Canada.

  • ChatGPT: 81,000 downloads on day one; ranked No. 1 on day two.
  • Gemini: 80,000 downloads on day one; ranked No. 6 on day two.
  • Sora: 56,000 downloads on day one (same as Grok); ranked No. 3 on day two.
  • Grok: 56,000 downloads on day one; ranked No. 4 on day two.
  • Claude: 21,000 downloads on day one; ranked No. 78 on day two.
  • Copilot: Only 7,000 downloads on day one; ranked No. 19 on day two.
