OpenAI to launch payment system in ChatGPT

According to Reuters, citing the Financial Times, OpenAI is developing a built-in payment system for ChatGPT that will allow users to purchase products directly through the chatbot. Instead of redirecting users to external websites, this new feature will enable purchases within the chat interface, while sellers will pay a commission to OpenAI.

Why is this important?

Currently, ChatGPT can recommend products and provide links to external stores. With this new payment system, users will be able to complete purchases without leaving the app, making online shopping faster, simpler, and more accessible.

Partnership with Shopify

OpenAI has already begun testing this feature with select brands in collaboration with Shopify, one of the world’s leading e-commerce platforms. The two companies started working together earlier this year to improve how product listings and reviews appear in ChatGPT.

OpenAI’s Financial Outlook

In early 2025, OpenAI revealed that its annual revenue run rate had reached $10 billion—nearly double the $5.5 billion figure reported at the end of 2024. However, the company also recorded losses of about $5 billion in 2024.

What’s next?

The planned payment system is expected to open a new revenue stream for OpenAI and turn ChatGPT into more than just a text-based assistant—it will become a full-fledged e-commerce tool. Users will soon be able to shop seamlessly through ChatGPT, while sellers can reach customers more easily through this innovative channel.

This move marks another step toward integrating AI more deeply into everyday life and signals a new phase in the evolution of digital commerce.
