Scammers Ran a Secret 350-Meter Fiber-Optic Cable Into Myanmar

Illegal connection

Law enforcement authorities in Thailand have discovered an illegal fiber-optic cable stretching approximately 350 meters across the border into Myanmar. According to the South China Morning Post, the connection may have been used to support a suspected online scam operation and an illegal casino operating in the neighboring country.

Police began investigating after receiving reports of suspicious activity at several houses in Nong Lu village, in Thailand’s Kanchanaburi province near the Myanmar border. Two dilapidated houses were found to be consuming unusually large amounts of internet traffic each day, comparable to the needs of an entire village.

During an inspection, officers discovered a 48-core fiber-optic cable with a durable protective covering. Installed along poles, the cable crossed the national border and extended roughly 350 meters into Myanmar. Preliminary findings suggest the line was used to route internet traffic from Thailand into Myanmar while bypassing conventional telecommunications infrastructure.
