Singapore to introduce new punishment for cybercriminals - caning

The Singaporean government has taken a tough step against cyber fraud — the parliament has adopted a new law amendment. According to the new rules, those who commit internet fraud can be punished with 6 to 24 lashes.

The decision was made against the backdrop of a sharp increase in cybercrime in the first half of 2025. During this period, tens of thousands of fraud cases were recorded, with total losses exceeding $ 385 million. Among the victims are students, pensioners and small business owners.

Singapore's Minister of Home Affairs Sim Ann said that "these penalties will serve as a strong warning to those who commit crimes on the Internet." The lashes will be carried out by specially trained officers.

According to the law, women, minors and men over 50 will be exempt from this punishment. Although international human rights organizations call the decision harsh, the Singaporean government says that the measure is justified for the safety of citizens.
