Telegram has handed over user data to the US

Telegram complied with 14 requests from US authorities between January 1 and September 30, 2024. These requests included the IP addresses or phone numbers of 108 users.

However, according to the full report for 2024, Telegram received a total of 900 requests from the US, covering 2,253 users. This shows that the execution of requests increased sharply in the last quarter of 2024. It was during this period that Telegram founder Pavel Durov was detained in France.

A month after Durov’s arrest, Telegram updated its privacy policy. Now the messenger is ready to provide user data to states only if there is a court order.

However, in 2024, not only the US, but also other countries sent Telegram more requests to provide information. Among them:

  • India (14641 requests),
  • Spain (213 requests),
  • Belgium (223 requests),
  • Brazil (302 requests), etc.

However, Telegram did not provide requests from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, China, Indonesia, Israel, Kazakhstan, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Thailand and Turkey.
