The Slovenian Government expresses interest in joining the Black Sea Energy Cable project

The Slovenian government has announced its interest in joining the Black Sea Energy Cable project, initiated by Azerbaijan. This strategic initiative aims to transport Azerbaijan’s green energy—particularly wind and solar power—through Georgia and across the Black Sea to Romania, and from there to the European Union. The project is being implemented based on a strategic agreement signed between Azerbaijan, Georgia, Romania, and Hungary, and holds significant importance for Europe’s energy security.

Slovenian officials have stated that their interest extends beyond the cable project itself. They have also expressed openness to joint research and development (R&D) cooperation in the fields of hydrogen energy, smart grids, and renewable energy technologies. This opens up new opportunities for expanding green energy collaboration between the two countries.

Slovenia has also praised Azerbaijan’s role as host of COP29, commending the country’s leadership in combating climate change and advancing the international green energy agenda. The statement emphasized that Azerbaijan’s initiatives in this field serve as an important example of energy transition and sustainable development.

Currently, technical and financial preparations for the Black Sea Energy Cable project are ongoing. Once implemented, the project is expected to export nearly 4 GW of green energy to Europe annually, further strengthening Azerbaijan’s position in the international energy market.

Slovenia’s interest in this collaboration is seen as a successful outcome of Azerbaijan’s proactive energy diplomacy.
