TikTok has been fined for violating the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which governs the security of children's data. TikTok has been fined nearly $379 million and ordered to bring its data processing practices into line within three months, according to a ruling by the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) today.
TikTok was found to be in breach of eight articles of the GDPR. These violations include the legality, fairness and transparency of data processing; Includes key issues such as data protection and security. While the decision found no violations in TikTok's age verification methods, it said the platform violated some articles of the GDPR by not showing content to users under 13 years of age.
A TikTok spokesperson specifically said they disagreed with the amount of the penalty and noted that the criticism was directed at features that existed three years ago.
