Turkish citizen living in Azerbaijan arrested for creating fake bank profiles and stealing money

Ertoğrul Akdemir, a Turkish national who has been living in Azerbaijan with his family for a long time and holds a residence permit, created fake social media profiles using the names of local banks operating in the country.

According to the information, the fake profiles advertised supposed special campaigns organized by banks, promising expensive gifts as part of the prizes.

Social media users, believing these ads, clicked on the provided links and entered their personal details, including bank card information.

Akdemir and his accomplices used this data to access the victims' accounts and steal various amounts of money. The total damage caused by their actions is estimated at 78,000 AZN (Azerbaijani manats).

Part of the stolen money was reportedly used by the accused to purchase cryptocurrency. The remaining funds were transferred to acquaintances through electronic wallets and later withdrawn in cash.

The preliminary investigation has been completed, and the criminal case against Akdemir has been submitted to the Baku Court of Grave Crimes.

During the hearing, presided over by Judge Elnur Nuriyev, Akdemir confessed to his crimes. The victims demanded compensation and expressed their grievances during the trial.

The court investigation has concluded. The prosecutor has requested a prison sentence of 7 years and 6 months for Akdemir.

His defense attorney, Eynulla Valiyev, asked the court for additional time to prepare his defense, noting that the defendant’s family had contributed significantly to the military efforts during the Second Karabakh War. Supporting documents will be submitted at the next hearing.

The trial will resume on September 10.
