Mark Zuckerberg stated during the company’s financial report today that AI-powered glasses will play a key role in people’s lives in the future. According to him, those who do not use such glasses will be at a cognitive disadvantage compared to others.
“Glasses are an ideal tool for interacting with artificial intelligence. Through glasses, AI can see what you see, hear what you hear, and talk to you,” Zuckerberg said.
He added that adding small or holographic displays to these glasses would significantly increase their capabilities. Meta has already developed several models in this field. For example, the “Ray-Ban Meta” and “Oakley Meta” smart glasses allow users to listen to music, take photos and videos, and get information from AI about what they see. These products have been successful in the market, and sales have tripled.
Zuckerberg stated that Meta’s Reality Labs division has been conducting research in this field for years to develop the technology. However, this division has been costly for the company — in the second quarter of 2025 alone, it reported a $4.53 billion loss. Since 2020, the total investment in this area has exceeded $70 billion.
Zuckerberg sees these expenses as an investment in future technology. In his view, these technologies represent the beginning of a new era not only for Meta but for all devices that work with AI.
Other tech companies are also showing interest in this area. Earlier this year, OpenAI acquired a startup founded by former Apple designer Jony Ive for $6.5 billion. The goal of the startup is to develop next-generation AI devices. Some other companies are experimenting with AI pins or wearable pendant-like devices.
Currently, glasses seem to be the most practical and socially acceptable form. Many people already wear glasses in everyday life, making this form factor natural and familiar.
Zuckerberg believes that this technology is not only about artificial intelligence but also about blending the digital and physical worlds:
“Glasses will be the best way to merge the physical and digital worlds. In this regard, the Metaverse vision will also be very important, and AI will accelerate that process,” he said.
