The Information and Communication Technologies Agency (ICTA) is deepening its ties with ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), which plays a key role in global internet governance. Within this framework, a meeting was held between Nail Merdanov, Chairman of ICTA’s Board, and ICANN Vice President Chris Mondini.
According to the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport, this meeting is a continuation of discussions initiated during the World Telecommunication Development Conference held in Baku. The parties discussed ways to improve Azerbaijan’s national domain name system, ensure the resilience of DNS infrastructure, and create a safer internet environment. In particular, the importance of Azerbaijan’s more active participation in global internet governance processes and the application of international best practices in the country was emphasized.
Practical cooperation issues were also addressed during the meeting. ICANN considered the possibility of organizing technical trainings and seminars for ICTA staff and local specialists, as well as providing expert support for improving the legislative framework. ICANN officials praised Azerbaijan’s contributions to regional digital development and expressed their readiness to support the country in this direction.
ICTA Chairman Nail Merdanov noted that the Agency has been conducting sectoral monitoring since its establishment. He highlighted existing gaps in the domain name system, inconsistencies with legislation, and concerns raised by both government bodies and the public. He stressed that close cooperation with ICANN is essential to ensure transparency and resilience.
In conclusion, the parties agreed to formalize their cooperation. In the coming months, a joint roadmap for the development of domain management in Azerbaijan will be prepared, and technical sessions will be held.
