Amazon has unveiled a major expansion strategy, announcing plans to invest approximately $54 billion USD (£40 billion) in the United Kingdom over the next three years. The investment will focus on expanding the company’s technology infrastructure, boosting operational capacity, and supporting the UK’s digital economy and artificial intelligence (AI) development.
Currently employing over 75,000 people in the UK, Amazon aims to create thousands of new jobs and significantly increase its local footprint. As part of the investment, the company will build two new state-of-the-art fulfillment centers in the East Midlands region, equipped with advanced technologies. These facilities are expected to become operational by 2027. Additionally, previously announced centers in Hull and Northampton are scheduled to launch operations this year and next, respectively — each providing employment for around 2,000 workers.
Amazon will also expand and modernize over 100 existing operations sites across the UK and establish new delivery stations. In London, two new buildings will be added to Amazon’s corporate headquarters, and Bray Film Studios in Berkshire will undergo a major redevelopment.
Beyond logistics, the investment includes Amazon Web Services' (AWS) commitment to spending an additional £8 billion (approx. $10 billion USD) on data centers across the UK from 2024 to 2028, further strengthening the country's position as a global digital hub.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer welcomed the announcement, calling it “proof that the UK is one of the best places in the world to do business and innovate.” Economists and government officials alike see the move as a strategic step that will enhance the UK’s competitiveness in areas like AI, logistics, and cloud computing.
Amazon’s bold initiative underscores the growing importance of technological transformation and corporate innovation in an increasingly AI-driven global economy.
