Amazon halts purchases from China and Asia

The likely reason behind the decision appears to be the import tariffs enacted during Donald Trump’s presidency. The affected products are purchased directly by Amazon from manufacturing countries, shipped to the U.S., and all customs duties are covered by the company itself. This form of direct import accounts for approximately 40% of Amazon’s product range.

At present, the exact number and volume of canceled orders have not been disclosed. The company has refused to provide a public comment on the matter.

According to available information, some of the canceled orders involve suppliers who have worked with Amazon for over a decade. One such supplier, a manufacturer of sun loungers, received a letter from the company stating that the orders had been placed “by mistake” and requesting that the products not be shipped. The value of the order amounts to $500,000, which, as of April 9, 2025, equals 42.7 million rubles according to the Central Bank’s exchange rate. The supplier noted that the products have already been manufactured and payment is expected, forcing them to look for alternative buyers.

Scott Miller, a former Amazon supplier relations manager who now works in consulting, confirmed that some orders were canceled without prior notice. According to him, the move has placed several suppliers in a difficult position. They will now have to either seek new buyers for their goods or renegotiate terms with Amazon, likely under less favorable conditions.
