Amazon has unveiled a prototype of “Amelia,” an AI-powered smart glasses system designed specifically to simplify the delivery process for its couriers.
The Amelia glasses will assist Amazon couriers in locating the necessary packages inside the delivery van, providing step-by-step navigation to a customer’s home or apartment, and taking photos to confirm successful delivery. According to The Verge, the glasses will connect to a special vest equipped with a replaceable battery and a button to call for emergency assistance. The glasses also feature photochromic lenses that darken in sunlight and become transparent in the shade.
Although Amazon has not disclosed when the device will be officially launched, the company stated that “hundreds” of couriers in North America are already testing the smart glasses. Before full deployment, Amazon plans to integrate additional AI functions, such as real-time error detection — for example, alerting a courier if a package is placed at the wrong address.
It’s worth noting that the smart glasses project was first reported by Reuters in November 2024. At that time, it was predicted that development could take “years” due to challenges such as creating a lightweight, long-lasting battery and gathering detailed route data for each address.
