Amazon invests $20 billion in AI and energy infrastructure in Australia

Amazon plans to invest $20 billion USD in Australia by 2029 to expand its data center infrastructure and strengthen the country’s artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. This move marks one of the largest foreign tech investments in Australia’s history.

The tech giant aims to increase server capacity, develop systems supporting generative AI workloads, and advance sustainable energy solutions as part of this initiative.

Amazon has already begun constructing three new solar energy farms, expected to generate a combined capacity of over 170 megawatts.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese praised the investment, stating on social media platform X:

“AWS’s $20 billion investment in Australian data centers will take our economy and productivity into the future.”

Amazon is pursuing similar initiatives globally. Earlier this month, the company announced a $20 billion plan to expand data infrastructure in Pennsylvania, USA. It also unveiled projects worth $10 billion in North Carolina and over $5 billion in Taiwan for new cloud infrastructure.

These moves reflect Amazon’s ongoing efforts to lead digital transformation and AI development on a global scale.
