Amazon plans to acquire satellite operator Globalstar and expand satellite connectivity for iPhone and Apple Watch devices through a new agreement with Apple. The move would strengthen Amazon’s position in the direct-to-device satellite market and increase competition with Starlink.
Through the acquisition, Amazon would gain Globalstar’s satellite constellation, ground infrastructure, radio-frequency licenses and related technologies. These resources would be integrated with Amazon Leo, the company’s satellite network designed to provide high-speed internet connectivity.
Amazon plans to begin deploying its own Direct-to-Device (D2D) satellite system in 2028. The technology is designed to let ordinary smartphones and other mobile devices connect directly to satellites for calls, messaging and data transmission without relying on terrestrial cellular towers.
The agreement with Apple provides for continued support of satellite features on the iPhone 14 and newer models, as well as the Apple Watch Ultra 3. Users will be able to send emergency SOS messages, contact family and friends, share their location and request roadside assistance in areas without cellular coverage.
Globalstar’s existing satellite network will continue operating. New satellites manufactured by MDA Space will also be used, followed by additional spacecraft from Amazon Leo. Over time, Amazon aims to build a network comprising thousands of low-Earth-orbit satellites, potentially serving hundreds of millions of devices worldwide.
The acquisition is expected to close in 2027, subject to regulatory approvals and the completion of technical requirements.
Amazon intends to use the infrastructure not only for Apple devices but also for other mobile devices, enterprise customers and government organizations. The company is particularly targeting areas without cellular coverage and backup communications during natural disasters and emergencies.
The deal expands Amazon’s competition with Elon Musk’s Starlink. Amazon aims to compete in both satellite broadband internet and direct satellite connectivity for mobile devices.
