Amazon has announced a $20 billion investment to build two new data centers in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania as part of its strategy to strengthen artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud technologies. This initiative carries great significance both in terms of technological advancement and regional economic revitalization.
One of the new data centers will be constructed near the Susquehanna Nuclear Power Plant, a location chosen specifically to ensure stable energy supply. The second center will be built on the site of the former Keystone Trade Center, which previously operated as a steel factory and now serves as a commercial hub.
Excluding the construction phase, Amazon’s investment is expected to create at least 1,250 permanent high-skilled jobs in the long term. Additionally, the company plans to support educational programs in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields. To encourage this investment, Pennsylvania’s state government has offered $10 million in workforce training incentives and tax exemptions on data center equipment.
The project marks a major milestone in Amazon’s efforts to maintain global leadership in artificial intelligence and cloud computing. Through this initiative, the company aims to further strengthen its AWS platform to remain competitive against rivals like Microsoft and Google. The use of nuclear energy is also seen as part of a broader strategy to ensure energy security and sustainability.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro described the investment as a strategically significant move at the national level. He emphasized the ongoing global race in AI between the U.S. and China, stating: “There is a battle for dominance in artificial intelligence right now, and it will be won either by the U.S. or China. Thanks to Amazon, the future of this battle will run through Pennsylvania.”
This project represents one of Amazon’s largest technology investments within the United States and reflects the company’s ambition to solidify its leadership in AI innovation.
