Anthropic has begun introducing a new “voice mode” feature for its Claude chatbot application. Currently in beta, the feature is only available through the Claude mobile apps.
According to information shared on Anthropic’s official X (formerly Twitter) account and updated documentation on the company’s website, voice mode allows users to engage in fully spoken conversations with Claude. Initially, this feature will be available only in English and will be rolled out gradually over the coming weeks.
Based on Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 4 model, the new capability enables users to interact with Claude even when their hands are occupied. The company’s support page states that voice mode transforms the way users engage with Claude by displaying key points on the screen while Claude speaks and allowing spoken input and audio responses in return.
Anthropic shared examples where users can ask Claude to summarize calendars, discuss documents or images, and perform voice-based information searches—making daily tasks more accessible. The feature includes five different voice options, allows seamless switching between text and voice, and provides transcripts and summaries of the conversations.
However, there are some limitations. Voice conversations count against the regular usage limits, with free users typically allowed around 20–30 conversations. Only paid Claude subscribers can integrate voice mode with Google Workspace services such as Calendar and Gmail. Integration with Google Docs is available exclusively to Claude Enterprise users.
Anthropic’s Chief Product Officer, Mike Krieger, confirmed in a March interview with the Financial Times that the company was developing voice capabilities for Claude. At the time, Anthropic was reportedly in talks with Amazon—its primary investor and partner—and voice AI startup ElevenLabs to support these developments. It remains unclear which of these partnerships have come to fruition.
It’s worth noting that major tech firms such as OpenAI, Google, and xAI have already launched voice-enabled chatbot features, aiming to create more natural and intuitive AI interactions. Claude’s new voice mode marks another step in this direction, enhancing the overall user experience and accessibility of AI communication.
