Anthropic restricts OpenAI’s access to Claude models

Anthropic, a company operating in the field of artificial intelligence, has cut off OpenAI’s access to its Claude AI models. According to reports, OpenAI was using these models internally for testing and analysis, particularly in areas like coding, content creation, and security, comparing their performance with OpenAI’s own AI models.

An Anthropic spokesperson stated that OpenAI’s use of these tools violated the company’s terms of service. These terms prohibit rival companies from using Claude models to develop competing products. As a result, Anthropic decided to fully restrict OpenAI’s access to Claude.

However, Anthropic will continue to provide limited access to OpenAI for evaluation and security purposes. This measure aims to ensure user safety and to monitor the quality of the products.

OpenAI’s spokesperson expressed respect for this decision but called the situation “disappointing,” noting that their API services remain accessible. OpenAI also regards API usage as an industry standard in AI.

Anthropic’s Chief Science Officer, Jared Kaplan, had previously opposed shutting down the rival Windsurf’s operations, emphasizing the importance of providing open access to competitors. He commented, “It would be strange for us to sell Claude models to OpenAI,” indicating a firm stance on restricting competitor access.

This development highlights the increasing intensity of competition in the AI sector and companies’ efforts to protect their technologies.
