Anthropic Signs Billion-Dollar AI Chip Deal with Google

Anthropic has entered into a new strategic partnership agreement with Google. Under the deal, Anthropic will lease one million of Google’s advanced artificial intelligence chips, known as Tensor Processing Units (TPUs). The total value of the chips is estimated to be in the tens of billions of dollars.

The large-scale infrastructure is expected to go live in 2026 and will provide Anthropic with more than one gigawatt of computing power. The company plans to use this massive capacity via Google Cloud to train future generations of its Claude AI models.

Google’s TPU chips stand out as a strong alternative to Nvidia’s hardware, which is currently in limited supply. Anthropic chose Google primarily for its cost-performance balance and energy efficiency. The partnership will also give Anthropic access to additional cloud services.

Meanwhile, rival OpenAI is reportedly pursuing major deals that could provide around 26 gigawatts of computing power—roughly equivalent to the energy needs of 20 million U.S. homes. Industry sources note that a single gigawatt of computing power can cost close to $50 billion. Rumors suggest that, fueled by the rapid growth in corporate product adoption, Anthropic aims to double or even triple its revenue next year.
