Apple TV+ is a streaming service launched by Apple in 2019. The platform is known for its original content, including Severance, Ted Lasso, The Morning Show, and Shrinking. According to recent reports, Apple TV+ faces an annual financial loss of approximately $1 billion.
The platform invests around $5 billion annually in original content production. Despite these high costs, Apple TV+ lags behind its competitors in subscriber numbers. With approximately 45 million subscribers, Apple TV+ holds a smaller market share compared to platforms like Netflix (301 million subscribers) and Disney+ (153 million subscribers).
Although Apple TV+ makes substantial investments in original content, its viewing share among streaming services remains less than 1%. For instance, Netflix holds an 8.2% viewing share in the U.S. To improve the efficiency of Apple TV+, the company has reduced its content budget by approximately $500 million, bringing it down to $4.5 billion. It remains uncertain whether the Apple TV+ service will become profitable in the future. However, Apple’s overall services sector continues to generate substantial revenue and report record profits.
Apple TV+ has earned critical acclaim, winning the "Best Picture" award in 2022 with the film CODA and receiving numerous Emmy nominations and awards for shows like The Morning Show and Severance. Notably, Severance broke viewership records on the platform and significantly contributed to the growth in subscriber numbers.
