xAI is preparing a lawsuit against Apple, accusing the corporation of violating competition rules. According to Musk, the App Store does not allow AI companies’ applications—except for OpenAI—to appear at the top of rankings.
He stated that Grok, the chatbot created by X and xAI, was not included in the “featured” apps list, while rival products received preferential treatment. Addressing Apple, Musk asked: “Are you playing politics? What’s going on? People want to know.”
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman responded by noting that Musk could be using the X platform to serve his personal interests, adding that his team’s main focus remains “creating high-quality products.”
According to CNN, Grok is currently ranked 6th in the “Top Free Apps” category on the US App Store, while ChatGPT holds the first place. Apple and OpenAI maintain close cooperation: in August, OpenAI introduced the GPT-5 model, which will be integrated into the Apple Intelligence system this fall alongside iOS 26.
Musk’s conflict with OpenAI has been ongoing for years. He left the company’s board in 2018, and in 2024 filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Sam Altman personally, accusing them of straying from the organization’s original mission and turning it into a closed subsidiary of Microsoft.
