On March 10, 2025, Elon Musk's X platform became inaccessible for thousands of users in the U.S. and several other countries. After about eight hours of downtime, Musk revealed that the platform had been targeted by a “massive cyberattack.”
In a post on X, Musk wrote, “We are facing a massive cyberattack. We are attacked every day, but this one was carried out with a lot of resources. It involves either a large, coordinated group or a country.”
Earlier, during a live interview with Fox News, Musk mentioned that the cyberattack on X appeared to originate from IP addresses in the Ukraine area. While there is no evidence to support Musk's claims beyond his statement, it is not far-fetched to believe that his platform could be vulnerable to cyberattacks.
According to Downdetector, a site tracking user reports of outages, X went down for some users around 5:30 AM ET, with more than 20,000 users reporting issues. These problems appeared to be resolved within an hour, but outages resurfaced at around 9:30 AM ET, with over 40,000 users affected. Some users were able to access X intermittently, but issues persisted until 1:30 PM ET.
While occasional outages are common for large platforms, they remain inconvenient for users.
