The AI chatbot Gemini has surged to the top of the free app charts in the App Stores in the U.S. and India, surpassing its main competitor, ChatGPT. Currently, ChatGPT holds the second position. Other popular AI apps lag far behind: Perplexity ranks 31st in the U.S., and Grok sits at 76th.
The Economic Times explains the rapid rise of Gemini by pointing to the growing trend of converting photos into 3D figures. For example, users upload images of their pets, such as chinchillas, to Gemini and request them to be transformed into plastic figurines, complete with packaging. This interactive feature has drawn significant user interest.
Regarding this achievement, Demis Hassabis, head of Google DeepMind, congratulated his team in a post on X, noting that this success is just the “beginning.”
It is worth noting that in April 2025, OpenAI revealed that the audience for the image generator in its GPT-4o model grew the most in India. This underscores the significance of Gemini’s leadership in the Indian market and highlights how intense the competition has become.
