Google gives users the ability to change their @gmail.com addresses

Google has introduced a long-awaited feature that allows users to change their existing @gmail.com addresses. Previously, this option was only available to users who linked an external email address to their Google account, while Gmail users were forced to stick with the address they initially chose. According to the company’s support page, this feature is now being gradually rolled out worldwide.

Under the new rules, users can replace old or unwanted email addresses with a new one without losing any data. The key benefit is that the old address is not deleted and is retained as a sort of nickname. This means that emails sent to the old address will still arrive in the same inbox, and users can log in with either address.

There are some limitations: Google allows this change only once within a 12-month period. All files and app data in Google Drive, Photos, and other services remain completely intact during the change. This update will provide significant convenience for millions of users, especially those who created accounts with casual or unprofessional names at a young age and now wish to update their account to a more professional form or refresh their personal information.
