Olmo 2 1B is a language model consisting of just 1 billion parameters. In the field of artificial intelligence, parameters refer to the internal components that a model learns and uses during its decision-making processes. The size of a model is typically determined by the number of these parameters. Despite its relatively small size, Olmo 2 1B has demonstrated superior performance in tests such as GSM8K, which evaluates mathematical reasoning skills, and TruthfulQA, which assesses factual accuracy. It has outperformed Google’s Gemma 3 1B, Meta’s Llama 3.2 1B, and Alibaba’s Qwen 2.5 1.5B in these benchmarks.
The model is open-source and has been released under the Apache 2.0 license on the Hugging Face platform. Ai2 has made not only the model’s code but also the datasets used for training — Olmo-mix-1124 and Dolmino-mix-1124 — publicly available. This transparency allows researchers and developers to fully retrain the model from scratch and easily integrate it into their own projects.
One of the major advantages of Olmo 2 1B is its compact size. Unlike large-scale models, smaller language models require significantly less computational power. Ai2 states that Olmo 2 1B was trained on a dataset consisting of 4 trillion tokens sourced from open-access materials, human-written texts, and AI-generated content. For context, one million tokens roughly equates to about 750,000 words.
However, Ai2 advises against using Olmo 2 1B for commercial purposes. Like other AI systems, the model may produce harmful, sensitive, or factually inaccurate content. Therefore, users are encouraged to exercise caution when working with it.
