Google is seeking permission to release millions of mosquitoes into the wild in the US states of California and Florida. The goal is not to create more mosquitoes for humans, but to reduce the number of species that transmit disease.
According to the application submitted by the company, male Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes carrying the Wolbachia bacteria will be released. In California, it is planned to release up to 16 million mosquitoes into the wild each year over two years. The same project is planned to be implemented in Florida.
According to experts, only male mosquitoes will be used, and they do not bite humans. After these mosquitoes mate with wild females, the bacteria prevents the formation of healthy offspring, and as a result, the population gradually decreases.
The project is aimed at combating West Nile virus and other mosquito-borne diseases. However, the implementation of the program requires approval from US regulatory agencies.
