Meta-owned social network Threads has launched a group chat feature. Now users can add up to 50 people to the same conversation. However, all participants must be subscribed to the creator of the chat. It is possible to give names to groups, and in the future the function of joining via an invitation link will also be added.
The company said that messages will not be encrypted, because Threads is intended for discussions around interests such as “hot topics”, sports, TV series, rather than personal correspondence. For confidential conversations, it is recommended to use other messengers.
The feature is currently active in some countries — the release for the UK and Australia will be slightly delayed, and in the European Union it will be launched in the coming days, along with private messages.
Threads was launched in July 2023 and by August 2025 had amassed 400 million active users.
