Jack Dorsey introduces Bluetooth-based messaging app “Bitchat”

Block CEO and Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey announced that he is working on a new messaging app called “Bitchat.” He shared on his X account that he spent the weekend developing the project. The app’s name is believed to be a combination of the words “bit” and “chat.”

“Bitchat” operates through a Bluetooth mesh network, allowing users to send messages without the need for Wi-Fi or cellular networks. While Bluetooth typically works within a range of about 100 meters, Dorsey claims that the app extends this range up to 300 meters by relaying messages through other users.

Such apps are useful in situations with weak network coverage, such as large events where finding friends can be difficult. A similar app, Bridgefy, was widely used during pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong. Both apps provide end-to-end encryption to ensure data security.

It is worth noting that Bridgefy is partly funded by Biz Stone, another Twitter co-founder. Dorsey’s involvement in this area reflects his interest in decentralizing technology. He is also a strong supporter of Bitcoin and originally founded the Bluesky project during his tenure as Twitter CEO, though he is no longer associated with it.

The “Bitchat” app is currently in beta testing via Apple’s TestFlight platform, and registration has been closed after reaching a limit of 10,000 users. The app is still under review by the App Store, and its official release date has not yet been announced.
