KAMAZ starts driverless freight transportation

The Russian transport company NATCAR has carried out the first international driverless cargo transportation with KAMAZ K5 trucks. The press service of KAMAZ OJSC reported on this.

Driverless trucks crossed the Russian-Kazakh border and covered part of the route in autonomous mode. The presentation of the project took place as part of the state visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to Astana to participate in the 5th Eurasian Economic Forum. According to information, the president was reported on the project today - May 28.

Russian Deputy Minister of Transport Dmitry Zverev said that this is not about test runs, but about real cargo transportation. At the next stage, it is planned to prepare a regulatory framework taking into account the harmonization of the legislation of the two countries.

Sergey Kogogin, General Director of KAMAZ, noted that autonomous logistics is already reaching the international level and the company is ready to continue supporting the development of the project.

NATCAR is currently considered one of the main operators of highly automated vehicles based on KAMAZ-54901. The company's fleet includes 18 driverless trucks. These vehicles are already used on the M-11 “Neva”, A-113 Central Ring Road and M-12 “Vostok” highways in Russia.

The launch of the international route is considered an important milestone within the framework of the “Driverless Logistics Corridors” project. The project is being implemented jointly with the Russian Ministry of Transport, KAMAZ and Avtodor.

KAMAZ presents itself as the only company in Russia that produces highly automated trucks on its own chassis. Until now, both Russia and Kazakhstan have been testing driverless technologies only within the country.

According to the Russian Ministry of Transport, driverless cars are planned to be allowed on public roads from 2027. The ministry noted that although the tests of driverless trucks have been successful, the improvement of technologies and coordination of regulations are still ongoing.
