Meta is partnering with Taiwan’s leading semiconductor manufacturer, TSMC, to begin chip production. According to Reuters, the company is currently conducting initial chip tests and plans to scale up production if the results are successful.
Sources indicate that the testing phase began after the completion of the tape-out stage, the final step before mass production. This phase typically lasts between three to six months and costs tens of millions of dollars, but success is not guaranteed. If the tests fail, Meta will have to restart the process from scratch.
Switching to in-house chip production will allow Meta to reduce infrastructure costs for computing. In 2025, the company's total expenses are projected to be between $114-119 billion, with $65 billion allocated to AI infrastructure development.
Meta plans to implement its custom chips for AI training processes starting in 2026. Initially, the technology will be used in recommendation systems, followed by its integration into generative AI products, including the Meta AI chatbot.
