Nvidia has taken a strategic step to strengthen its infrastructure in high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence by acquiring SchedMD, the creator of Slurm, an open-source workload management system. Although the financial details of the deal were not disclosed, the companies stated that the acquisition will support the open-source software ecosystem for developers and accelerate innovation in artificial intelligence.
Used in more than half of the world’s most powerful supercomputers, Slurm is considered an industry standard for scheduling and allocating complex computing resources. The software plays a critical role in training generative AI models and will continue to operate independently and remain open source under Nvidia’s ownership.
Having collaborated for over a decade, the two companies aim to deliver more optimized solutions to customers across fields ranging from autonomous systems to healthcare sciences through this acquisition. Nvidia plans to further enhance Slurm on its own hardware platforms while continuing to support heterogeneous computing environments and diverse hardware systems.
