OpenAI is working on a new payment system that will allow users to make purchases directly from ChatGPT in order to expand its revenue streams, the Financial Times reported, citing sources close to the company.
The “checkout” feature, currently in development, will allow users to purchase products offered during a chat with ChatGPT directly from the chat window. Sellers will pay OpenAI a commission for orders placed through this system.
The new system is expected to become the second main source of revenue for OpenAI after ChatGPT subscriptions. An early version of the payment system has already been introduced to several brands. The most important of these brands is Shopify, a Canadian-based e-commerce platform that has previously collaborated with OpenAI.
Currently, ChatGPT users are redirected to companies’ websites based on product recommendations. The new payment system will allow users to make purchases without leaving the chat screen. This is aimed at making the chatbot experience more functional and commercially viable.
