OpenAI creator ChatGPT is reportedly in talks for a new funding round at a $100 billion valuation, led by previous investor Thrive Capital. This is significantly higher than OpenAI's previous valuation of $86 billion and the highest ever for an AI startup.
Thrive will reportedly invest about $1 billion in this round. According to WSJ, Microsoft is also expected to participate in this funding round. It is not yet known who else will join the round. OpenAI's other existing investors include Khosla Ventures, Infosys and Y Combinator.
This funding round could be OpenAI's largest foreign investment since Microsoft invested nearly $10 billion in January 2023.
OpenAI needs these funds. Earlier this year, its annual revenue exceeded $3.4 billion, the WSJ reports. According to The Information, OpenAI will make around $5 billion in losses by the end of the year and has already spent $8.5 billion on AI training and staffing.
