OpenAI has started offering its new open models through Amazon Web Services (AWS), marking the first time OpenAI models are available on AWS. Users can now access these models via Amazon’s Bedrock and SageMaker AI services.

While anyone can download the models from the Hugging Face platform, Amazon provides them with OpenAI’s full knowledge and approval. This partnership is a significant competitive move for Amazon, positioning the company alongside major AI model creators like OpenAI.

Until now, AWS mainly offered models such as Anthropic’s Claude and other AI models from Meta, Cohere, DeepSeek, and more. The Bedrock platform allows customers to build generative AI applications using a variety of models, while SageMaker is primarily used for training and developing AI models for analytics purposes.

Microsoft remains OpenAI’s largest cloud partner, with its Azure platform hosting the widest deployment of OpenAI models. OpenAI also offers optimized versions of these new models for Windows devices through Microsoft.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy faced questions from Wall Street analysts last week about AWS losing ground to competitors, especially Microsoft, in the AI space. This new collaboration with OpenAI is Amazon’s first major step to strengthen its position in the AI market.

Meanwhile, Oracle has signed a $30 billion annual data center services deal with OpenAI, meaning OpenAI plans to pay Oracle more than all its other cloud providers combined.

For OpenAI, partnering with AWS is strategically important amid strained relations with Microsoft. It brings OpenAI closer to the largest cloud provider and makes it easier for AWS customers to experiment with OpenAI models.

At the same time, OpenAI is releasing these two high-performance models under the Apache 2.0 open-source license, giving it a competitive edge after Meta announced it likely will not open-source its upcoming “superintelligence” models.
