OpenAI has officially announced that it will open an office in India. The new office will be located in the country’s capital, New Delhi. The company plans to build a team of local experts and work closely with government agencies, universities, companies, and developers.
Sam Altman said their goal is to make AI more accessible and to create new opportunities “for India, with India.” According to him, India has huge potential for artificial intelligence thanks to its young population and strong technology base.
At the same time, the company has introduced a new and cheaper subscription plan designed specifically for the Indian market. Called ChatGPT Go, the plan will cost only ₹399 per month (around $5), giving more people the chance to use AI services.
OpenAI also plans to organize various events in the country. This month, India will host its first Education Summit, and by the end of the year, a large-scale Developer Day for programmers will take place.
India’s Minister of Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, said the country has strong opportunities to grow in the field of AI, and OpenAI’s move will further strengthen India’s role on the global technology map.
This is not OpenAI’s first office in Asia. The company already has offices in Japan, Singapore, and South Korea.
Minister Vaishnaw added:
“India has all the conditions to become a global leader in artificial intelligence: strong tech talent, a world-class developer ecosystem, and government support. OpenAI’s decision will add to the country’s path of innovation.”
